You can see photos of our time at PFO below, but I (Anne) just wanted to give a brief summary of our time there. Tom may do a longer post of his impressions
The training focused on three areas:
- learning more about yourself so you can see how you will likely interact with your team at the school (through personality, communication, conflict resolution tests)
- learning about culture (how you view your own, how you are likely to view someone else’s, how to transition and adapt to a new place)
- learning how to adapt a classroom environment to teach children from many different countries with varying levels of English
Those are the basics, but we really benefited the most from the time spent with our advisor, our small group and just talking with people at mealtimes. It was amazing to get to know people who will (or already do) serve Christ all over the world. Our host family who graciously housed us for two weeks was wonderful. NICS provided a great children’s camp for Avery. Just knowing she was well cared for and having fun helped us to fully engage in the sessions and have some time to process all we were learning.
We were also excited to get to know some of the people we will be serving with in La Paz. Six other Highlands staff members were there with us. It’s comforting to know that we will see some familiar faces when we arrive in Bolivia. I think God has pulled together a very devoted and creative team of teachers to serve Him at HIS. A husband and wife who work at the school, Marcos and Valeria, came from La Paz to PFO. We got to spend a lot of time getting to know them and their advice and encouragement was so helpful to us.
