The Fishers in La Paz, Bolivia

“Welcome to the graveyard…”

That’s how two of our school’s board members have greeted us.  It’s truly a graveyard (though the most beautiful I’ve ever seen!) in two ways.

Allow me to explain.  No, no time.  Allow me to sum up.

First, parts of La Paz (whose name, which I need to go look up, is eerily similar in origin to Chicago, but I digress) is literally built on top of ancient graves.  Some here won’t build on certain sacred areas.

But also – and perhaps more importantly – La Paz has come to be known as “the graveyard of missionaries”.  What does this mean?  Quite simply, as missionary families have lived here, and their children have grown to school-age, there have historically been no appropriate schooling options; sadly, this has driven many committed to serving Christ to leave La Paz for other parts of Bolivia.  La Paz, which has the highest concentration of people, has the fewest missionaries.

That’s where you and I come in.

Highlands International School, where Anne and I serve, was created four years ago by Christian Bolivian families who wanted to meet the need of missionaries so they could send their children to an English-speaking Christian school and they could remain where God had first called them.

I just wanted to let you who support us and the mission of Highlands (or are thinking about it!), financially and/or in prayer, know how your support fits into the big picture of the work God is doing here!

Chau for now.
