The Fishers in La Paz, Bolivia

You know you live in Bolivia when. . .

I know some of you are wondering what is different about living here, so here are some things I can think of. . .

You know you live in Bolivia when. . .

you get to ride up a mountain to school, to shopping, to lunch… ;)

your milk comes in a bag

you sort your trash to separate the plastic and cardboard out, not for the recycling truck, but for the people who go through your garbage every morning

you brush your teeth and make your ice from bottled water

you buy nearly everything, including your computer printer and vacuum cleaner, from an outdoor market

your first morning routine is to raise all the shades in the house to let in the sun so your rooms will begin to heat up

you hand wash your dishes and hang your laundry on a clothesline :)

you get your fresh bread every day or two from a bakery a few blocks from your apartment

you look out your office window to see the snowy peaks of Mt. Illimani

you put the new washing machine you just bought in the back of a taxi to bring it home

you are very excited to eat at Burger King, where you put salsa golf on your fries (ketchup mixed with mayo)

the toilet paper goes in the trash can!

you get used to cars coming within centimeters of bumping into each other all the time (they never seem to actually hit!)

you are (quite literally) on top of the world

That´s a few I can think of now, will add more after a few more weeks . . .

Not much time to write. We have been here a week and are a little limited, not having Internet at home and having had a very busy week (accomplishments were made: we went up 2,500 feet and back down in a taxi to get our washing machine, we have successfully eaten yummy salteñas without making a mess, Anne has ordered ice cream (helados) for herself and Avery, we have groceries, we know where to get lightbulbs and really good cheap bread, and neither of us has died from altitude sickness), and we praise the Lord!

The staff here is awesome, as are the people of Bolivia. Avery, age three, loves the taxi rides down the mountain road from el Central to our apartment in Achumani. Anne is a trooper and is determined to try her… basic but growing… Spanish a little every day.

We start school stuff tomorrow and the kids come in a week.

I think we may have found just the place to get online until we get it in our apartment, so we should be posting more, really soon!

Grace and Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Comment and email often, and be patient with us if you leave us a voice mail on our Skype. We will get on and call back really soon (really soon in Bolivia Time, that is – wink!)
