The Fishers in La Paz, Bolivia

Although some things in Bolivia are inefficient, many services are actually more convenient and the customer service is better here. In the grocery store, they automatically put your groceries on the belt for you and take them out to your car or taxi. You don’t have to be old and/or a female to get this service like you do in the States :) At Burger King, the cashiers are quite friendly and professional, no grunting or mumbling at you when taking your order here! They actually have employees at the restaurants with kids’ playgrounds who stay with your kids for free and watch them while you eat!

Another case in point. . . I needed to have some pants altered because I’ve lost some weight since we moved here. Tom called a tailor that a friend recommended to me. He came to my house at 5:30 in the evening and measured me for five pairs of pants in less than ten minutes. He’s coming back to my house with the pants in twenty-four hours and charging me a grand total of less than eight dollars. Now that’s service!

A side note. . .one bizarre thing about being here is that the stores only carry pants for very tall skinny people. In case you don’t know, there aren’t that many tall skinny people in Bolivia! I’m not sure where Bolivians buy their pants, but I haven’t found even one store with one pair of pants that fit me. Thus the need for a house call from the tailor!

Did you get your pants back from the tailor? Do they fit?

All the more reason to have a Lands End catalogue.

What a great service . . . a housecalling tailor! I can’t find any pants here either. All of the pants are sized for extremely tall, thin women. New Zealand does have tall, thin women, but there are a lot of women under 6ft (and most of the women are more stout than waffish). I can’t figure out where they’re all getting their clothes. I ordered petite pants from LLBean. Hope your altered pants fit!
