Although we missed our families today, we are thankful for a fun and memorable Thanksgiving. We actually started celebrating on Saturday, when we had a big traditional feast with the staff from the school. Avery especially enjoyed spending that day with her friend, Abby. They played dress up and made everyone look at their twirly dresses and posed for lots of pictures. (Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so when I get a photo from someone, I’ll have to post it!) Then this morning started out like a normal school day, but this afternoon we had “Team Day” at Highlands. I brought Avery over to campus so she could enjoy it too. We had Olympic-like events, including a closing ceremony complete with a winner’s platform, dramatic music and a big trophy. I was amazed how all the kids really tried their best at all the events and had great attitudes. The teams had 1st through 12th graders all mixed together. The high school kids were wonderful with the younger ones- coaching them, encouraging them and making them feel like they were an important part of the team.
We ended the day with a dinner with new friends from the English service at an Anglican church here in La Paz. We appreciated their hospitality and the chance to get to know them better. And it was great to have turkey twice in one week! (Turkeys are very expensive here.) I made those no-bake chocolate peanut butter cookies to bring for dessert. They were a big hit, I guess I’ve introduced a new kind of cuisine to Bolivia!
Tomorrow we are embarking on an adventure to Lake Titicaca, so I’m sure we’ll write a post including some pictures when we get back.
