Here is the link to our photo album from our trip to Lake Titicaca:
It was our favorite place we’ve visited in Bolivia so far. The lake is beautiful, and the town of Copacabana was the most touristy we’ve seen so far. It’s no Disneyworld, but there were actually several good restaurants to choose from and things to see and do. We visited a cathedral and took a boat ride to Isla del Sol, an island with many Inca ruins. Since we had Avery with us, we opted for the short tour, which meant most of our time was spent on the boat, but we did set foot on the island for about an hour. The trip there and back was breathtaking in and of itself. Plus, we have now sailed on the highest navigable lake in the world!
Traveling in Bolivia is always an adventure. Livestock usually come into the picture in some way. This time we had pigs right below our hotel and sheep grazing literally directly outside our window. The bus trip was interesting as our fellow travelers were a mix of native Bolivians who commute 4 hours from Copacabana to La Paz for work every week and gringo travelers. We are an interesting anomaly since we are obviously gringos but are not tourists since we live here. We drove through some areas of extreme poverty and isolation. We could see farmers plowing their fields with oxen. Then the bus stopped at a narrow part of the lake to cross over. The bus drove onto a primitive barge while the passengers got off and took a ferry across. I use the term ferry lightly. We could certainly feel the waves as made our way to the other side to get back on the bus. On the way home, the trip got interesting as we went through three climate changes due to altitude. It was warm and fairly sunny in Copacabana, then it snowed hard in El Alto and by the time we got to our apartment in the lower zone about 40 minutes later, it was only cloudy and sprinkling.
The pictures are more interesting than this post, so take a look at them on Facebook!
