Things I Miss

It’s Easter Sunday.  Avery has a bit of a fever, so we have been home.

When you’re home on a holiday, you think a lot.

I was on Skype with my friend, Cory, and he mentioned that, at 6:00 a.m. today, he ended his Lenten meat-fasting with a hearty Easter breakfast, including a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich.  Made me think about things I’ve been missing while here in La Paz.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m glad God has opened up this oportunity, and I’m totally loving the kids, the school, our community group…  But it’s about 9-10 weeks from the end of our first year here, and homesickness needs to stop by for a visit, or I wouldn’t be normal.  So here goes:

I miss (since Cory made me think of it) McDonald’s breakfast sandwiches (specifically the Sausage McMuffin with egg, but I have many favorites); I miss Chic-fil-A (also at breakfast… I’m sensing a theme); I miss my family; I miss crosswalks with signals for pedestrians to cross safely; I miss my CR-V; I miss rivers that don’t stink (you think American rivers get dirty? Google river la paz bolivia); today, I especially miss Church of the Good Shepherd in Davidson (I miss them every Sunday, but today, especially)…

I miss the oddest things…

I miss Kershaw Correctional Institution, where we’d have Kairos reunions; I miss Hefty trash bags; I miss our troubled cat Abby who attacks us at random; I miss commercials (we get all our T.V. from the internet); I miss (excuse the redundancy) really good burgers

I guess this is just one of those wonderful things the Father does to take care of us.  He transitions us.  When we were getting ready to move here, I found myself distancing myself from things there in the States.  Now, as the time draws near to sojourn in the U.S. for almost two months, things are drawing closer to my heart again.  There’s a sweetness to such discontent.

Oh, and for the record, the Cadbury Cream Egg I had at lunch was absolutely rotten. I can only hope the one I’ll have tomorrow is better. :(
