The Fishers in La Paz, Bolivia

weeknight winter boredom. . .

I have to be honest, I am blogging because I am bored. Winter is coming, and so it gets dark about six o’clock and it gets cold. It’s not that cold outside, but without any heat or fireplace and no insulation, it’s quite nippy inside. So lately, on weeknights, my schedule after dinner (and Avery is in bed, or sometimes before :) ) is to take a hot bath or shower to get warm, pile on pajamas and then hop into to my pre-heated bed, thanks to my very expensive dual control electric blanket I bought at the grocery store here. It was the best purchase I’ve made in Bolivia! Then I read for a VERY LONG time until I go to sleep. This has been great as far as enhancing my literary life, but for awhile now I’ve been through with the books I brought back from Christmas. It is difficult to find English books, so I’m at the mercy of borrowing from friends or the teacher section of the school library. I am sort of ashamed to say I’m now reading through the Mitford series again because of the lack of choices available, and it’s just so darn comforting to read about Anglicans in the NC mountains!

My only variations to this evening weeknight routine are once a week when we download a LOST episode and when I decide to bake something. Baking is a good pasttime because it means I get to warm up the kitchen by letting the oven preheat for an extra long time without feeling guilty about using up gas from the tank. Then, whatever I make is hot when I eat it, which also adds to me feeling warm and not cold, which is the underlying goal of my nights!

Let me just say that I’m not the only one who gets cold. Tom is drinking lots of hot tea and hot chocolate, and Avery actually sometimes uses two blankets on her bed. She still won’t sleep in socks though! This is the child who as a small infant would be burning up at night unless she slept in an air conditioned room with no blanket and only the thinnest pajamas on. So, for her to sleep under flannel sheets and blankets, I think I am justified in saying it is cold in our apartment at night!

So, I know I sound totally pitiful and dull, but just thought I’d share about this part our life in Bolivia! I will say that winter days here are lovely – mild temperatures, sunshine and blue skies. . . so maybe my next post will highlight our daytime activities!

Oh, I had forgotten it is winter there. We are starting to finally get warmer days. The sky was a beautiful KY blue today and I was able to do some flower potting. Wish I could send you some books. Mitford series is a good easy read. Stay warm.
