The Fishers in La Paz, Bolivia

Meet the Fishers

Tom Fisher grew up in Cleveland and Dayton, Ohio. His mom, dad and sister have all migrated to the Charlotte, NC area where the Fishers have lived for the past six years. He met his wonderful wife on a blind date while attending Wright State University in Dayton. He graduated with a degree in Spanish Education, moved to Chicago to be close to Anne, and began working as an adult English as a Second Language teacher. After moving to North Carolina, Tom continued working with ESL students at Mt. Ulla Elementary School. Tom is excited to take on the challenge of the various ages and levels of students at Highlands (HIS) as the EFL teacher (note: once you are outside the United States, it becomes English as a Foreign Language – this distinction is very important to Tom!)

Tom is a singer/songwriter and loves to lead others in worship at church, at concerts, at coffeehouses, wherever he is invited to sing and play guitar! He will mentor the students at HIS who are on the chapel praise team.

Anne Fisher was born in Kentucky and grew up in Tipp City, Ohio. She is an only child, and her parents also live in the Charlotte area. She is a proud alumna of Wheaton College (IL). Anne has worked in all kinds of education-related jobs including teaching in public and private school settings, serving as an “administrator-in-training”, and working as a children’s pastor. She has started graduate school three times and believes she will actually complete her degree this time at Columbia International University in Education Administration. She will serve as part-time Assistant Director at HIS, specifically working with the preschool and elementary age classrooms.

Tom and Anne were married at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago in March of 1999. They enjoyed being part of Holy Trinity church plant and living near the University of Chicago. While living in Davidson, Tom and Anne have helped with another church plant, Church of the Good Shepherd, which is affiliated with the Anglican Mission in America.

The most important and wonderful event in the Fishers’ life together was the birth of their daughter, Avery, on April 5th, 2004. They adopted her two days later and then spent the next three weeks at the beach in South Carolina waiting for the inter-state paperwork to go through – what a great way to start life as a family together! Since then Avery has not stopped asking to go back to the beach! Avery attends a Spanish-speaking preschool in the mornings.
